New station will connect riders to Scarborough General Hospital and more than 3,400 job opportunities.
SCARBOROUGH — Major construction work is underway on the second of three stations for the Scarborough Subway Extension, marking another milestone in the Ontario government’s plan to fight gridlock and bring rapid transit to new areas and tens of thousands more commuters across Ontario. The new station at Lawrence Avenue and McCowan Road in Scarborough will accommodate more than 5,000 riders, support more than 4,000 transfers during rush hour, feature a terminal linking to express bus services on Lawrence Avenue and provide a subway connection to Scarborough General Hospital and more than 3,400 job opportunities.
“Once complete, the Scarborough Subway Extension will reduce travel times for thousands of residents, connecting more people to good jobs, schools and vital appointments,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Our government will continue to deliver for the people of Scarborough through our historic investments to expand public transit and health care, create jobs and lower costs for families.”
Crews have started piling and excavation work at Lawrence and McCowan Station. The Scarborough Subway Extension is expected to keep 3,000 workers on the job annually during construction and bring 38,000 people within walking distance of transit once complete.
“We’re bringing world-class rapid transit to Scarborough by extending the TTC’s Line 2 subway service almost eight kilometres farther east,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Under Premier Ford’s leadership, we’re building the infrastructure we need to support one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario, and we’re keeping thousands of workers on the job during construction.”
Ontario is building the largest subway expansion in Canadian history, which includes the Ontario Line, Scarborough Subway Extension, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and Yonge North Subway Extension.

- The Scarborough Subway Extension will extend the TTC’s Line 2 subway service 7.8 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road.
- When complete, the extension will accommodate an estimated 105,000 daily trips and put 38,000 more people and 34,000 jobs within a 10-minute walk of three new stations.
- The Scarborough General Hospital is part of the Scarborough Health Network (SHN). SHN is a major employer in Scarborough and provides 850,000 people throughout the eastern Greater Toronto Area access to health-care services.
