Building the First Ever Medical School in Scarborough
In 2022, I was proud to announce our government would be building the first ever medical school in Scarborough at UTSC – the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).
This project is the most significant investment we have seen for a very long time in Scarborough – Rouge Park, training the next generation of medical professionals right here in our community. At full enrollment, we will graduate the following positions each and every year:
- 40 physicians
- 56 physician assistants
- 30 nurse practitioners
- 40 physical therapists
- 300 health sciences students
We are putting Ontario students first by requiring all medical schools in the province to allocate at least 95% of all undergraduate medical school seats to residents of Ontario, with the remaining 5% reserved for students from across Canada. We know that students are more likely to practice where they studied – and we need more doctors and medical professionals right here in Scarborough.
We have already begun construction of the state-of-the-art facility at Morningside Avenue and Military Trail called the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex which will house the SAMIH program.
Starting in 2026, we will welcome the first classes on campus!
I am confident this project will transform the future of health care in Scarborough, providing opportunities for young people to study here at home while improving long-term outcomes in this community.
I am looking forward to continuing to work with the community to deliver on the things that matter most!
