Ontario Supporting Hydrogen Project in Scarborough

Scarborough – The Ontario government is investing $5.9 million through the province’s Hydrogen Innovation Fund to support nine new projects, including Volta Energy in Scarborough. As part of Ontario’s Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, the government is supporting projects that pave the way for the production of reliable, affordable and clean electricity from hydrogen to help power the province’s growth

Volta Energy in Toronto is receiving $491,352 to assess how reversible solid oxide hydrogen cells technology can help provide a pathway for hydrogen integration into the electricity grid.

“Our government is building new electricity generation and storage to power the next major international investment, the new homes we are building and industries as they grow and electrify,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy. “Natural gas currently performs a critical role keeping the lights on during periods of peak demand, and we are investing now in new technologies like hydrogen that could help meet this demand going forward.”

“I’m so pleased to be working with Minister Smith to accelerate the province’s low-carbon hydrogen economy with new funding that will leverage Scarborough’s talent, infrastructure and resources,” said MPP Vijay Thanigasalam.  “I’m thrilled Volta Energy will help drive job creation and economic growth across Scarborough while supporting Ontario’s growing electricity grid.”

The Hydrogen Innovation Fund, administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator, includes new and existing facilities that will provide real-world demonstrations of hydrogen production and consumption, and help pave the way for the production of clean, reliable and affordable electricity from hydrogen to help power the province’s growth.

These investments build on Ontario’s clean energy advantage as the government makes progress on the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy that laid out eight concrete actions to make Ontario a leader in the latest frontier of energy innovation – the hydrogen economy.
